Mayor Leonardo Williams brought the resolution forward and told colleagues the bill “dramatically, reduce[s] the local powers” to deliberate how communities grow. “This takes it away… and it just removes the ability for us at the local level to deliberate on how we actually grow and develop our own communities,” the mayor said during discussion. Councilmembers from different parts of the council voiced support; no speaker opposed the resolution at the meeting.
The council then moved, seconded and approved the resolution by a unanimous vote. Councilmembers said they would coordinate with other city mayors and councils across North Carolina in making a joint statement opposing the legislation.
