Council declares vacancy after Parker resignation; process to fill seat to be set

The Newport City Council declared a vacancy on the council after receiving a resignation notice from Councilor Parker dated May 20, 2025. The council formally declared the vacancy for the term ending Jan. 4, 2027 and directed staff to return with a proposed schedule and next steps at the June 16 council meeting.
City staff told the council the appointment process is charged to the council by the city charter and the first step is a formal declaration of vacancy; subsequent steps, including schedule and appointment procedures, will follow council rules. A motion to declare the vacancy was made and seconded and approved by voice vote.
Councilors added brief remarks expressing appreciation for Parker’s service; staff said they will prepare the appointment timeline and bring it back for council approval.
