Council adopts ordinance to sunset two advisory committees

The Newport City Council adopted Ordinance No. 2025-2 to amend sections 2.05.045 and 2.05.050 of the Newport Municipal Code, enacting staff recommendations to sunset two advisory committees.
City staff reported the Council had previously commissioned a committee-structure work group that delivered a report in August 2024. At the May 19, 2025 meeting staff recommended sunsetting the Discover Newport Committee and the Bike and Pedestrian Advisory Committee. The ordinance presented on June 2 implements that change by amending the cited code sections.
No members of the public addressed the council during the public hearing on the ordinance. After the public hearing closed Councillor Hall moved to adopt the ordinance and to read it by title only; the motion was seconded. The council conducted a roll-call vote with each member recorded as voting aye: Councillor Ehman, Councillor Romagu, Councillor Hickman, Mayor Kaplan, Councillor Hall, and Councillor Jacoby (Councillor Parker was absent). The motion carried.
Staff said the ordinance follows the committee-structure work group's recommendations and will formally end the two committees named in the adopted code changes.
