Maury County School District staff presented proposed revisions to personnel policies covering sick leave, vacation and staff time schedules, and asked the board to consider placing the changes on new business.
The sick-leave revision would consolidate current language into a single policy covering support, certified and administrative staff while preserving existing payout differences and retirement-related provisions. The draft expands the list of family members who may be covered for illness or bereavement and clarifies that requests beyond immediate family may be considered "on a case-by-case basis with the approval of the superintendent." The draft also requires employees to use accrued sick leave before taking unpaid leave and retains the state-board definitions used for teachers.
Board members asked about potential abuse and documentation. Staff said principals may request a doctor's note when patterns of absence trigger review and that the superintendent retains authority to approve nonstandard relationships such as legal guardians or foster-care responsibilities.
On vacation, staff proposed language requiring employees to exhaust vacation days before taking unpaid days; staff said Tennessee School Boards Association (TSBA) had reviewed the approach and offered no legal objection.
Finally, staff said the district is transitioning time-and-attendance processing from the county finance office to the HR office. The redline updates routing language and staff requested the policy take effect on 2025-07-01, the planned date for the administrative transition. District finance staff confirmed time data will still be supplied to the Office of Financial Management for payroll; the policy change clarifies where timesheets are routed for approval and recordkeeping.
Several board members asked to include legal guardians explicitly and to ensure principals and HR have flexibility to review documentation. Board members also requested language clarifying that payout of accrued sick leave applies only to time earned while employed by Maury County Schools; one member said she would propose that change as an addendum in personnel policies.
