Maury County School District staff described plans to upgrade preschool playgrounds at Randolph Howe Elementary and Battle Creek Elementary to improve accessibility for children with disabilities.
Staff said Randolph Howe will receive specialized preschool equipment and a rubberized 'pour-and-play' surface better suited for students with mobility needs. The resurfacing quotes are typically "a little over $100,000," staff said; the playground equipment line was listed in the budget amendment as roughly $162,000 for specialized preschool equipment. Staff said the Randolph Howe work would be paid from state preschool grant carryover funds.
At Battle Creek, staff recommended adding accessible equipment to an existing playground using federal funds. The district noted the work is out to bid through a cooperative purchasing process; detailed contracts were not yet submitted to the work session but will be provided with the operations attachments ahead of the June voting meeting.
Board members asked about scope and per-site allocation. Staff said Randolph Howe's preschool classroom addition triggered the need for an accessible surfacing and equipment package; Battle Creek's upgrade was described as adding accessible components to the existing playground.
The playground items were discussed as part of the operations and budget-amendment materials and were scheduled for placement on the June consent agenda with supporting bids and contracts to be attached prior to the voting meeting.
