Council recognizes Upland residents serving in the military and military-banner program

The Upland City Council recognized local service members and presented the community military-banner program’s acknowledgments during the May 27 meeting.
Lisa Monforte of the Upland Military Banner program described the items presented to families — a mini replica banner, a blue-star flag, a blue-star lapel pin and historical information donated by the local VFW — and thanked business and individual donors who support the banner program. "This day is to remember that others paid for that every that every breath free breath you ever get to take," Monforte said during her remarks referencing Memorial Day as a remembrance of those who paid the ultimate price.
Two families were recognized in person: Aubrey Del Monte (Navy), represented by her mother Erin Del Monte, and Ensign Sheth, who described being in a Navy medical program and thanked the Upland community for its support while growing up. The presenters explained the full-size banners are installed as close as possible to Memorial Day and Veterans Day; the program also distributes mini replica banners to families present at recognition events.
Why it matters: the program is a community recognition program that publicly honors residents with family members serving in the armed forces and fosters community support for military families. The veterans’ recognition portion of the meeting included VFW members in attendance and a request to the community to applaud local service members.
