Crawford County 4-H leaders report 552 students attended safety day, pilot craft workshops

Paula Lucas and Katie Gadowski, 4-H educators with Penn State Extension, reported to the Crawford County Board of Commissioners on May 28 that recent programs drew strong participation and local support.
Lucas told the board the county’s annual 4-H progressive safety day for fourth-grade students drew 552 children from public and private schools and covered 10 topics, including weather, sun, water, electrical, tractor/equipment, ATV and bicycle helmet safety, tick safety and other public-safety subjects. The event used the county fairgrounds and volunteers, she said.
Gadowski and Lucas also described a new spring “make-and-take” workshop series designed to expose members to family living projects. The series included classes on sewing, knitting and crocheting, cake and cupcake decorating, and plant and flower gardening. Presenters said many participants were existing animal-science members who had not previously carried family-living projects and that attendees left with items they created for display to family members.
Both educators thanked the county for use of the fairgrounds and for staff support that helped the events remain on schedule. Commissioners did not take formal action on the presentation; the remarks were recorded during the public comment/presentations portion of the agenda.
