County staff read the resolution into the record, which recounts Pettit’s background in Del Norte County, his role as a founding member of the sheriff’s Mountain Rescue Team (later Sheriff's Search and Rescue), decades of training in tracking, rope technical rescue and swift‑water response, and 27 years as a volunteer firefighter (17 years with Crescent Fire Protection District and 10 years with Smith River Volunteer Fire Department). The resolution extends the board’s appreciation and best wishes upon his retirement.
Supervisors and other speakers praised Pettit’s field expertise, training contributions and local knowledge; one speaker recounted Pettit's ability to dismantle a vehicle with simple tools for training purposes. The board adopted the resolution by unanimous roll call.
