Library Board outlines work plan, youth engagement and technology priorities

Deborah Klayman Bosch, chair of the Saint Helena Library Board of Trustees, presented the board’s first formal work plan and described priorities including technology access, youth engagement and improved community outreach.
Klayman Bosch said the seven-member volunteer board has created subcommittees for communications, compliance, organizational sustainability, technology and youth engagement. She said the board piloted an ex officio youth board member and has supported onboarding for the library’s new head librarian, Mara Strickler.
Klayman Bosch said the board is reviewing library policies on collection development, displays, and photography or video at programs. She told councilors the board aims to balance the library’s traditional mission with evolving community needs.
Vice Mayor Deasy and other council members asked about the board’s technology goals. Klayman Bosch said the subcommittee is reviewing back-office and user-facing systems, including interlibrary-loan access, digitized content (audio and ebooks), laptop and hotspot lending, and pilot “pods” for Zoom meetings and other live interactions.
Council members praised the board’s organization and recommended continued communication between the library board and the council. Director Dave Jans was acknowledged for coordinating the library’s move into the Community Services department and facilitating board–staff collaboration.
