District updates construction, track closure and kindergarten renovations; board approves partial warehouse roof repair

PINE BLUFF, Ark. — Pine Bluff School District staff gave the board a detailed update on ongoing construction at the new high school and other facilities projects, and the board approved a partial roof replacement for the district warehouse.
Facilities staff described visible progress at the high school construction site, noting steel, roof decking, masonry and concrete pours for the cafeteria, auditorium and a concrete safe room that will double as a practice gym. The CTE building — where welding and cosmetology labs will be located — is reported to have roofs on and is moving into a “dry-in” phase, staff said.
On district grounds, the board was told the main track will be closed beginning June 9 while crews resurface the surface. Facilities staff estimated the closure would last about four to six weeks and said the district will post updates on the website and keep the community informed through board meetings.
The board also heard an update on a kindergarten center renovation: mold remediation is complete, painting is finished and maintenance is finishing floor work and final technology installations. Staff said they expect teachers to begin moving in once maintenance completes the scheduled work.
Superintendent Barbee asked the board to approve a targeted roof replacement on the flat portion of the district warehouse (the building formerly used as a post office in downtown Pine Bluff). The board approved a contract with Coryeo Roofing for a partial roof replacement on the flat section; staff said the work includes a 20-year warranty and will protect stored items including cafeteria supplies and two walk-in freezers.
Staff also told the board the district will begin bidding for athletic upgrades and is soliciting additional subcontractor bids. A planned playground purchase for Forest Park was described; staff said two quotes are in hand and a third is being sought before final purchase.
Why it matters: The high school building and related projects represent a major capital investment for the district. The warehouse roof repair was approved as an operational maintenance action to prevent further water damage to stored food and equipment. The track resurfacing will temporarily close a community resource, so the district said it will notify the public and provide updates.
