South Gate honors robotics team for judge's choice at FIRST Tech Challenge world championship

The South Gate City Council presented certificates of appreciation to the International Studies Learning Center robotics team for participating in the FIRST Tech Challenge world championship in Houston, Texas, April 16–19, 2025, and for receiving the judge's choice award.
Mayor Maria Davila read a certificate commending the team for representing South Gate among more than 8,800 teams worldwide and praised students, coaches and parents for their work.
"You guys put us on the map," Mayor Davila said, congratulating the team for the city recognition earned by competing at an international championship.
Coaches and parents in the audience thanked the council and described the trip. One parent noted the team had limited early-year resources but advanced against well-funded competitors and called for continued investment in the program.
The council invited the team and coaches to take photographs. Certificates listed team members and staff including team captain Maxim Garcia and coaches Rosario Lutero and Kenny Lou. No formal policy action or vote accompanied the presentation.
