The West Sacramento City Council on May 21 issued a proclamation recognizing May 11'17, 2025 as National Police Week and May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and Council members invited department leaders to speak about a fallen-officer project.
West Sacramento Police Chief (name not stated during the presentation) and Sergeant Robert Schmidt described the department's plans to honor a department officer killed in the line of duty and a K-9 who died in service. Sergeant Schmidt told the council, "We started a project to pay tribute and remember both of those officers by adding an outdoor monument to our Police Department that will be located in the parking lot. We've also created a locker display, and we'll have a police uniform, a photo, and other items to remember, Officer James McKnight. For our fallen canine officer Captain, We are creating a display for him too, equipped with a photo, pad, collar, and an inscription."
City and department leaders said portions of the monument project are already met with community generosity. Sergeant Robert Brazier, president of the police association, thanked the council for support and described departmental growth. Council members, including Mayor Guerrero and Council member Orozco, praised the department's community engagement and called the monument a meaningful way to remember service and sacrifice.
Why it matters: the presentations combined ceremonial recognition with concrete memorial-planning details: a planned outdoor monument, locker and uniform displays and public fundraising or in-kind support already underway. Staff and council members indicated continued city support for the memorialization efforts and acknowledged the department's role in community safety, training and outreach.
Next steps: Council members and department staff took photos after the proclamation; the department said it will continue to engage the community and coordinate project details with the city.
Selected quote: "We started a project to pay tribute and remember both of those officers by adding an outdoor monument to our Police Department that will be located in the parking lot," Sergeant Robert Schmidt said.
