Timberlane facilities update: Sandown Central gym roof RFP, high-school bollards and summer projects

District facilities staff told the board they issued an RFP to replace the gym roof at Sandown Central and recommended awarding the work to Melanson Roofing; administrators asked the board to approve moving forward with the bidder selected through the RFP process.
Facilities staff also updated the board on a high-school exterior renovation tied to the Canopy project: contractors will remove I-beams and masonry, replace the walkway and install 23 lit bollards along the front walkway to create a uniform, illuminated path. The district elected not to purchase crash-tested bollards because the cost increase would have been large—staff said crash-tested units would have raised the project cost substantially (an estimate in the meeting cited an increase from roughly $11,000 to about $96,000 for an upgraded option). Facilities staff said they will order two extra bollards as spares and that installation of electrical work will be done by district electricians; a trench-digging rental was noted as an additional cost.
Work scheduled for summer includes rooftop HVAC unit replacements at Atkinson Academy, remaining courtyard window work at the high school and small control upgrades at Sandown North. District staff said they are coordinating principals, custodial and maintenance teams for summer schedules.
Board members asked whether bollards would be solar-powered or crash-tested; facilities staff said they will not be solar and they are not crash tested, and they explained the rationale for that decision given available funding and district priorities. Administrators said they will continue to track costs and report back as bids and schedules firm up.
