The Dane County Agricultural and Natural Resources Committee approved a resolution authorizing exceptions to a 2025 memorandum of understanding addendum with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to allow shared funding for seasonal LTE crews that work on DNR and county properties.
A county parks staff member described the arrangement as a multi-year partnership in which the county hires seasonal LTEs and the DNR provides an annual allocation to cover about half of those LTE costs. "Rather than having separate crews doing different things ... it's more efficient if we can combine our forces," the staff member said. The shared crew, the staff member said, increases both staffing and hours available to tackle invasive species and restoration tasks across the Dane County park system, including Joaquin Iron County Park, Feske County Park, McCarthy County Park and Pheasant Branch Conservancy.
Supervisor Downing asked whether the shared funding effectively doubles crew capacity; the staff member replied, "the short answer, it does double the work that's being done." A motion to approve the exception was moved by Supervisor Marin and adopted by voice vote.
