Summary
Commissioners recapped the Heritage High School Arbor Day event, the Flower and Garden Festival logistics and damage to event tents, and the Treesburg tree giveaway with counts and leftover stock.
Commissioners reviewed recent public events and tree giveaways, reporting on what went well and what needs follow up.
Arbor Day at Heritage High School: Members said volunteer and town staff coordination shortened planting time. Commissioners reported students participated and that the town provided tools and trees. One commissioner noted trees given to students were used and planted. The commission agreed to continue partnering with schools inside town limits.
Treesburg tree giveaway and Spring Trees initiative: Commission members said large turnout depleted some species quickly. The transcript recorded approximate counts discussed by members: roughly 30 pawpaw, about 70 dogwood, and about 50 redbud or similar varieties were distributed across events; three larger sycamores remained unsold because of their size. The commission reported about 30 leftover willow saplings were relocated behind the town mulch pile for temporary storage; staff will propose future planting sites.
Flower and Garden Festival: Commissioners reviewed event operations and damage to a rented canopy. The festival’s canopy frame was damaged by wind on the second day; members discussed purchasing a new 10-by-10 canopy for commission use depending on fiscal capacity. "We have to purchase one anyway for our department. And if there's funds left over, I recommended that we purchased one for the 3 commission today," one member said.
Volunteer coordination and materials: The commission discussed sign‑up sheets for volunteer follow up and noted that some tree recipients live outside town limits; members decided the commission will not exclude these residents but will prioritize in‑town plantings going forward. Members also discussed signage, storage of supplies, and plans to track tree plantings more closely.
Next steps Staff will inventory leftover trees, propose sites for willow plantings, and report back on canopy replacement cost and fiscal availability.
