Parks Committee hears opposition to proposed dog park; approves yard-award and meeting date change

"I just wanted to state my concern and basic opposition to the proposed dog park in that little strip of land there next to the pickleball courts. It's tiny," Simmons said during the public-comment portion of the meeting.
Committee members and staff spent most of the meeting on routine business and park operations. A parks staff member reported crew work to ready parks for holiday weekends, saying, "We actually did replace the water fountain that's there at Water Tower Park, the one that wasn't working. We had one working, one not working, so that has been, we went ahead and just went ahead and replaced that." The staff member also described irrigation improvements at the butterfly garden, soil amendments and the start of electrical work to add lighting and an outlet under the basketball/skate area at John L. Tompkins park to support events.
The committee reviewed recent community and volunteer events. Members described the April 25 Arbor Day planting at Turtle Park — planting ‘‘maybe six trees’’ and pollinator plants, and handing out seed packets — with Councilwoman Graves and fire department personnel noted as attending. Committee members also announced a Fourth of July Walking Beach Parade that will start at Beach Access 8 and walk to Beach Access 4, with water, watermelon and giveaways; organizers said promotional flyers were prepared with the CVB.
