The Washington County Board of Education on May 20 approved amendments to the FY2026 general fund operating budget that restore $1,280,000 to cover eight school buses, offset by reductions elsewhere in the budget.
The amendment, approved by motion, replaces $1,280,000 in the general fund for eight buses and reduces OPEB funding by $625,000 and the salaried resource pool by $656,000. Board members discussed the change after staff said the Board of County Commissioners’ capital reserve did not include the bus replacement cycle in FY2026.
Board President Zentmayer moved to approve the proposed amendments to the FY26 general fund operating budget; the motion carried.
Staff told the board the county commissioners approved their general fund operating budget earlier the same day and that that county budget omitted the capital reserve funding for the bus replacement cycle. Staff presented the three offsets and said they reflected consensus reached by the board at a meeting two weeks earlier.
The board’s action directs the school system to implement the specified changes in its FY26 general fund operating budget; no additional information on longer-term bus-replacement schedules or vendor awards was presented at the meeting.
The amendment was handled in open session and took effect upon the board’s vote.
