Commission explores web hub, partnerships with VPAP and museum to share civics resources

Alice Riley, a commission member who compiled a proposed partners list, said she had not contacted groups yet and asked the commission whether it wanted a centrally hosted page, links posted on multiple partner sites, or its own commission-managed site. Lucille Miller said the Virginia Public Access Project (VPAP) offered to host a page for the commission and to design one; Miller also flagged the John Marshall Center for Civics at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture as another potential hub.
Kristania Brown of the Virginia Department of Education reminded the commission that the VDOE already maintains a commission page with agendas, minutes and resources and cautioned against unnecessary duplication. Brown said VDOE can receive and post resource submissions and can broadcast opportunities to division leaders and teachers via existing VDOE communications.
Commissioners discussed trade-offs: a page on VPAP would be less expensive and could reach wider audiences, but VDOE would not endorse outside materials posted on its pages. Members proposed convening partners to compare available resources, avoid duplication, and coordinate professional development or shared funding asks. Commission staff said a June 9 meeting with external partners will be held, in person or virtually, to collect materials for the instructional guides.
