Vestavia Hills board celebrates student state champions and thanks outgoing president Scott Brown

The Vestavia Hills Board of Education opened its meeting with recognition of student academic and athletic achievements across the district and a public tribute to outgoing board president Scott Brown.
Board members invited the Pizitz Middle School robotics team to the dais. "We have 31 students participate this year," said Alyssa, the robotics coach, describing a program of sixth- through eighth-graders that built six robots; five of the teams competed at the state championship and three qualified for the world championship in Dallas.
At the high school level the board recognized the Science Olympiad team and noted Tomas Moravec’s first-place finish in the statewide air-trajectory event. The district also showcased students who competed in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA); the high school personal finance team coached by Steven Johnson won the state personal finance competition. Multiple athletic teams also received recognition: boys tennis claimed a fourth consecutive state championship, girls tennis won a state championship, boys track was named state champion, girls soccer won a state championship, and boys golf won a state championship.
Separately the board formally thanked Scott Brown as he completed five years of service, including serving as board president during the past year. Colleagues credited Brown’s legal perspective and steady leadership; one letter read at the meeting praised his "brilliant mind" and described him as "a team player, compassionate toward others" who left the system "better than [he] found" it. Brown reflected on the experience, saying serving on the board had been "a joy" and thanking colleagues, administrators and his wife for their support.
Board members emphasized parental involvement, coaches and teachers as key contributors to the students’ achievements. Several students and teachers from the recognized programs joined the board for group photos.
No formal board actions were tied to the recognitions; they were ceremonial acknowledgments entered on the meeting record.
