Goldsboro council issues proclamations, presents employee and community awards

Goldsboro City Council opened its May 19 meeting with several proclamations and presentations recognizing local history, city workers and community groups.
The council read a proclamation honoring the Dillard Goldsboro Alumni and Friends Incorporated for preserving the legacy of Dillard High School and Goldsboro High School and for scholarship work tied to their 70th annual homecoming scheduled for May 22–25, 2025. Alumni representative (name given in the meeting) described ongoing fundraising and recent gymnasium renovations funded in part by the city and said scholarships remain the organization’s primary focus.
The council also proclaimed the week of May 18–24, 2025, as National Public Works Week, acknowledging the city’s public works employees and the department’s role in maintaining streets, water and other infrastructure. Public works staff accepted the proclamation and council members thanked the department for daily operations and for wearing high-visibility safety gear while working citywide.
Council recognized two employee awards: the Employee of the Quarter (Robin Gorgenas) for taking on additional duties including ADA coordination and risk management, and Supervisor of the Quarter (Gaston Lopez) for work in environmental codes and public engagement. Both employees accepted brief remarks of thanks.
The council read a proclamation honoring Goldsboro-born educator Dr. Edmund W. Gordon, noting his academic career, honors and his May 20, 2025 induction into the Wayne County Wall of Fame.
Community partner updates included remarks from Octavius Murphy of the Phi Alpha Alpha chapter of Omega Psi Phi, who described the chapter’s mentoring work at North Drive Elementary School and recent district-level awards for mentoring and fatherhood programs.
The recognitions and presentations were included in the meeting’s opening ceremonial items. These items required no council vote beyond the routine meeting procedures.
