Committee defers emergency funding for national neighborhoods conference after budget questions

A Jacksonville Neighborhoods Community Services Public Health and Safety Committee meeting on Monday, May 19 debated an emergency appropriation proposed to pay registration fees and certain host-city costs for the 2025 National Urban Areas (NUSA) neighborhoods conference, then deferred the bill to the Finance Committee for further review.

The committee heard the emergency request from Councilmember Johnson, who said the city is serving as host for the conference beginning the next day and that registered neighborhood organizations would not need to pay up front: “There will be no reimbursement necessary… all of those neighborhood organizations that are registered have already received invitation,” Johnson said. He told the committee the appropriation would offset registration fees and help cover Neighborhoods Department costs for producing the conference.

Committee members pressed for details about how the money would be distributed and whether the Neighborhoods Department already had funds available.
