Galveston IDC reviews West End beach nourishment projects, asks for legal opinion on funding a remediation crew

City staff presented a five-year financial forecast for the beach silo and reviewed two near-term projects: a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers CAP204 dredging placement on the West End and a Park Board-led nourishment program for mile 8 to 13 of the beach.
The Corps project will use dredged material from the Houston Ship Channel to place sand along roughly two miles of West End shoreline. Kyle (staff member) said the Corps is contributing $10 million to the work and the city received a $10 million grant to cover any incremental costs above the Corps’ contract limit. Staff said a dredger contract is being finalized and placement work is scheduled to begin in August or September of this year.
