Facilities update: courthouse windows, veterans office renovation, transfer-station repairs and Veterans Park drainage work

David Spicer, project manager, told the Alleghany County Board of Commissioners about several ongoing facilities projects and maintenance activities.

Spicer said an office in the front upstairs of the administration building is undergoing renovation to provide a larger space for Veterans Affairs. Work on courthouse windows is nearly complete; just “two or three” windows remain, and rails for a sidewalk and steps are due to be installed soon. Spicer said the courthouse now has color-changing lights that can be adjusted for seasons and holidays and that county staff have been trained on the control system.

At the county transfer facility, crews repaired thin metal on the existing tipping floor with patches to keep operations running; Spicer noted that crews begin work early to have the facility ready for opening. Recycling and material receipts for the reporting period included 4.06 tons of commingled material, 5.38 tons of cardboard and 13.28 tons of scrap metal, which yielded $2,379.20 for the county.

Spicer said TRC (consultant) completed a survey of the transfer facility and is preparing diagrams and drawings to support an RFP.

At Veterans Park, crews installed a drain at a corner planned for a new brick wall; Spicer said contractors will remove sod, level and install curb and asphalt to direct water to the drain before brick work and final sod replacement.

Spicer also summarized recent animal-control activity: assistance to the sheriff’s department, seven animals (dogs or cats) picked up, 13 animals running at large, four traps deployed (part of that group productive), 83 hours of work, 22 calls, and about 580 miles traveled.

Spicer closed by thanking staff for their work and noting continued attention to these projects.
