Parks staff report full seasonal staffing, field tournaments and progress on Groveland and archery projects

Parks and Recreation staff told the commission June 11 that summer operations are underway and multiple capital and maintenance projects are progressing.
Parks superintendent Brian Swobadeaux said crews are at full staffing for the season and have completed the first fertilizer application. Ridge Valley Park is hosting multi-day tournaments, with as many as 80 games over a typical weekend across nine fields, requiring extensive field preparation and site upkeep. Swobadeaux said the crew recently moved the South Valley goats to a larger 12-acre paddock and that the city is preparing for a week-long World Senior Disc Golf tournament at North Valley at the end of June into early July.
Swobadeaux reported that Groveland Ballfield restoration has achieved roughly 75% turf cover since seeding about three weeks earlier, with fencing and final amenities remaining. The South Valley archery range has elevated platforms under construction and staff expect a soft opening in July or an August public opening depending on weather and scheduling; the range will support youth and adult recreational archery programs.
Recreation superintendent Julie Dorshak reported that the department ordered replacement cardio and strength equipment (delivery June 23) and that the aquatics supervisor position has been vacant this year; multiple staff have filled scheduling and supervisory duties while recruitment continues. She said the department has recorded about 1,600 summer registrations so far and noted modest declines in some swim lesson and recreational program registrations; staff plan targeted surveying to understand causes.
Both managers said they are working on the 2026 budget and equipment replacement lists, and that new registration and facility software under consideration would include kiosks and mobile check-in to streamline program check-in and billing.
