Maricopa High students invite board to 70th anniversary; Be Awesome presents year-one outcomes

Four students from Maricopa High School addressed the board during public comment on Aug. 13 to invite the governing board to the school’s 70th anniversary celebration on Sept. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. Hazel Levy, Chloe Avila, Gabriel Macias and a student named Rami said the event will include entertainment and food and is sponsored by DECA and MEChA.
Hazel Levy said, “We would like to formally invite you all to our seventieth year anniversary celebration at Maricopa High School. It'll be on September 5 from 5 to 7PM.” The students described DECA as a national organization that teaches leadership and business skills and said MEChA promotes leadership and community volunteerism among Latinx students.
Brandy Homan, representing Be Awesome, thanked the board for in-kind facility and office support and described the nonprofit’s recent outcomes. Homan said Be Awesome served 219 fourth- and fifth-graders in its after-school life-skills program last year and reported approximately 250 family members attended graduation ceremonies. A third-party evaluation cited by Homan found increases in students’ perceived harm from substance use: 6.6 percent for marijuana, 10 percent for underage drinking and 7 percent for e-cigarettes; Homan said there was a 33 percent increase in students talking with parents about substances. Be Awesome also offered workshops for parents (31 attendees) and tabling across the district’s middle and high schools, reaching about 3,000 students.
Homan closed by inviting campuses not yet involved to request Be Awesome’s programs. “None of this would be possible without the ongoing support of community partners like MUSD,” she said.
