Tavares proclaims National Public Works Week and honors public works team for state project award

The City of Tavares on May 21 adopted a proclamation declaring May 2025 as National Public Works Week and recognized the city's public works team after the Florida chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) named the Regional Workforce Training and Innovation Center project the state’s Public Works Project of the Year.
The proclamation highlighted the role of public works professionals in maintaining streets, facilities, solid waste, parks and water and sewer systems, and invited citizens and civic organizations to recognize the contributions of public works staff. Mayor and council members read the proclamation and adopted it by voice vote.
Staff presented the APWA award and invited public works leadership to the front. The presentation listed the project team and public works leaders in attendance, including James Dillon, director of public works; Terry Horne, fleet operations manager; Jeff Henderson, solid waste operations manager; Brian Moore, street operations manager; Tracy Anderson, parks operations manager; Stacy Mewbourne, operations assistant; and Kelly Conway, senior administrative assistant. Council members praised the department’s performance and congratulated staff for state recognition.
The award and proclamation were ceremonial; staff said the recognition reflects collaborative efforts among city staff and contractors and aligned with APWA criteria including construction management practices, safety performance, community relations and environmental considerations.
