Board orders indefinite expulsions after executive sessions; reentry plans to be developed

The RSU 14 Board of Directors held two executive sessions on June 11 to consider possible student expulsions and later voted to expel the students for indefinite periods, the board announced during public session.

At the first public motion after the closed meeting the board “determines the following, that the student's actions were deliberately disobedient, that the removal of the student is necessary for the peace and usefulness of the school,” and that the student be expelled effective immediately for an indefinite period. The board also directed the superintendent to notify the student and their parent or parents in writing and provide written findings and conclusions. The motion specified that if a student is expelled indefinitely, “a reentry plan will be prepared by the superintendent in consultation with the student and their family,” and that the parent and student have the right to request readmission pursuant to law.

A second executive session produced a similar motion and vote for another student. In both cases the chair announced the motions carried; the transcript records the motions and the board’s direction to the superintendent but does not identify the individuals who moved or seconded those motions in public session.

The board did not disclose details of the incidents in open session; the expulsions followed the legal process invoked during executive session under 20‑A M.R.S.A. §4056 (citation as read in the meeting). The board stipulated written notification to families and the creation of reentry plans as outlined in the motions.
