Craig Skatepark Alliance asks Moffat County to pledge Laudie Simpson land for $2–3 million destination concrete skate park

Members of the Craig Skatepark Alliance asked the Board of Commissioners Tuesday to pledge land at Laudie Simpson so the group can raise planning and construction funds for a concrete skate park they describe as a regional destination.

John Miller, speaking for the alliance and introduced as a Moffat County resident, presented a draft partnership idea that would minimally pledge county land at Laudie Simpson for the project and allow the group to pursue planning dollars. Miller said the initial planning and community‑engagement phase would cost an estimated $250,000–$300,000 and that construction would likely range from $2 million to $3 million. The Community Foundation of Northwest Colorado is listed as the alliance’s current 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor.

Miller said the alliance would handle fundraising, community engagement, design, contracting and project management to deliver a high‑quality facility. He argued a concrete park is durable, lower maintenance in Moffat County’s climate, and can be designed with interpretive features that honor the county’s mining and agricultural heritage. The alliance described seeking a location on a decommissioned softball field at Laudie Simpson, preferably the field nearest the gate to allow winter access when gates are closed.

Commissioners expressed general support for exploring the idea but said the county attorney should review the appropriate vehicle for any county‑partner agreement (MOU, lease or contract). The board suggested staff and the alliance meet with the county attorney when that position starts in the coming weeks and return with a proposed document for a July meeting. No formal pledge or vote was taken; commissioners directed staff to consult the county attorney and return a recommended approach to the board.
