Sheriff: two new Tahoes in service; several older vehicles to auction, K-9 funding and new fuel card approved

The sheriff's department reported operational changes and equipment requests to the commissioners on May 19.
"We had received the 2 new Tahoes. They've been outfitted. So they are on the road," the sheriff said, and added the department wants to auction several older vehicles including a 2019 Dodge Durango, a 2005 Chevy Silverado, a 2010 Ford Explorer and a 2015 Ford Explorer. The Health Department expressed interest in the 2015 Explorer and the sheriff said the department had no objection to transferring that vehicle to the Health Department.
The sheriff said the 2010 Explorer was being considered for reassessment work and that county assessor staff may use the vehicle if they assume fuel and upkeep. Commissioners agreed to hold the 2010 for further discussion with the assessor to ensure budgetary coverage for mileage and fuel.
The sheriff also reported staffing updates and inmate statistics: two new hires (Clark Croft and Aaron Zimmerman) are on shift, inmate population that morning was 108 with 12 federal holds and 54 Grant County holds, and the county invoiced $89,268 for out-of-county inmates in April. The department reported a fundraising result: a Ride to Lightning fundraiser raised over $12,000 for Shop with a Cop.
Commissioners approved a sheriff's appropriation of $4,500 for continuing education and K-9 equipment/training. The board also approved the county's move to WEX fuel cards for deputies, approving the purchase and use of dedicated fuel cards that restrict purchases to fuel and limited vehicle maintenance; the motion carried 3-0.
No formal vote was recorded in the minutes for the proposed vehicle transfers beyond consensus language indicating agreement to move the listed vehicles to auction and to coordinate transfer or decommissioning for vehicles kept for county departments.
