Cedar Springs awards asbestos abatement and commercial dishwasher contracts for Beach project

The Cedar Springs Public Schools Board approved two actions May 19 related to the ongoing Beach school project: awarding an asbestos abatement and demolition contract and approving purchase and installation of a commercial automated dishwashing system for the school kitchens.
For asbestos abatement and demolition, staff recommended accepting the lone fully compliant bid from Pavement and Demolition Services LLC for $79,521. Two other bidders were disqualified: one failed to submit required documents, and the other proposed a timeline that overlapped demolition work and extended into June, which staff said did not meet project specifications. District staff said Northern Analytical Services, the abatement consultant, has prior working experience with the recommended contractor and supported the selection.
The board approved the $79,521 award. Staff said abatement work will begin immediately after students leave the building, with a tight five‑day window for the abatement phase before demolition and subsequent site work (parking, loop, staging and landscaping). Staff indicated the asbestos materials encountered to date were non‑friable and that prior limited findings were contained; no students were in the affected areas during previous abatement work. The contract is under the previously approved project budget.
Separately, the board approved purchase of a commercial automated dishwasher and accessories to serve renovated kitchen spaces. Two qualified bids were received after one vendor withdrew a bid that omitted installation costs. Staff recommended awarding the equipment and installation contract to Stafford Smith for $37,855 and authorizing an owner contingency of $14,500 to cover potential price escalations such as tariffs or import duties, for a total possible project cost up to $52,355. Staff said the cost would be charged to the food service fund and would count toward the district’s requirement to spend down excess food service fund balance.
Board members approved both motions during the May 19 meeting. The abatement and demolition award and the dishwasher purchase are part of the Beach project’s final demolition and kitchen renovation scope and are scheduled to be completed ahead of the new school year timeline for August installation of the dishwasher.
