Chambers said the current design work explores less-impactful options, such as removing a single southbound lane rather than a full two-way lane reduction, to preserve capacity while adding protected bike facilities.
Public feedback and operational concerns: staff said the primary concerns received were congestion and traffic operations at two intersections (Harris Road and Fifth Street Station), emergency vehicle access and uncertainty about how new facilities would function. Chambers said some respondents living downtown and in Fifeville expressed strong support because a protected facility would improve access to grocery stores and downtown destinations.
Next steps: consultants will refine alternatives, model traffic and propose intersection-specific design tweaks for council review later this summer. Staff emphasized coordination with transit and emergency services on any lane or signal changes.
