Charlottesville to modernize downtown parking garages with plate-recognition system

Charlottesville city officials on June 2 previewed plans to modernize the two downtown parking garages and three city-owned surface lots, replacing aging pay-and-exit equipment with a system that links payment to a phone number and license plate.
The update, delivered by Chris Engel, director of economic development, said the city manages contracts for day-to-day garage operations and is moving toward newer camera- and software-based technology designed to speed vehicle entry and exit. "This new system creates an experience that is going to be quicker for just about everybody," Engel said.
