Commissioners table authorization for County Road 300 East study by USI

A proposed pavement and subgrade study of County Road 300 East by USI was tabled to allow staff to gather traffic counts and other data before approving the study authorization.
The White County Commissioners tabled a request to authorize USI to conduct a study of County Road 300 East (between U.S. 24 and County Road 218) that would include pavement corings and an assessment of subgrade conditions and funding options.
USI representatives described the scope as a more extensive pavement coring effort than past work, aimed at producing construction options and funding pathways — for example whether the road would be a candidate for federal-aid or community-crossings funding. The consultant said the process could take years to reach construction; "it could take 7 to 8, 9 years to get this project construct into construction," the USI representative told the board.
Commissioners asked for traffic counts and other data before approving the authorization. A highway commissioner asked whether county trucks could gather analytic data; highway staff said they already had performed some drive-by evaluations. After discussion, a commissioner moved to table the authorization to proceed and the board approved the tabling motion.
Why it matters: County Road 300 East is a major north–south corridor in the county with reported heavy truck traffic and has not had a major overhaul since roughly 2016–2017, staff said. The study would shape future funding and phasing decisions for an important local corridor.
Next steps: Staff will collect traffic-count data and other requested information and return the authorization to the board at a later meeting for action.
