NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Newport News City Council at a June 10 work session approved using $65,000 in council contingency funds for four local nonprofit organizations and amended the motion to postpone a separate request for the Boys & Girls Club after a council member said he would abstain.
Councilman Coleman presented the contingency requests and said the recommended awards were Achievable Dream — $40,000; The Apprentice School Foundation — $5,000; Hampton Newport News Achievement Foundation — $10,000; and Tri Cities Hurricane Youth Foundation — $10,000. He asked for a motion to allocate the funds.
