Board approves 6-foot wrought-iron fence for property at 7625 E. 20th St. S.

R. Connor Construction LLC, represented by Russell Connor, requested the variance saying the property had experienced crime and the owners want to improve security for residents and reduce police calls. Connor told the board the proposed fence would be a 6-foot wrought-iron fence with curved tops and metal posts; the portion within the 10-foot street setback faces 20 First Street and would match the conceptual plan submitted with the application. Connor also said cameras would be installed on the property.
Board members asked whether adjacent property owners had commented; staff reported no correspondence for or against. Members noted that moving the fence back would reduce parking on the site and that much of the fence would be transparent wrought iron rather than solid screening. No members of the public spoke in opposition.
The board found the proposed fence, as described in the applicant’s statement and conceptual plan, would be in harmony with the spirit and intent of the code and not injurious to the neighborhood. The motion to approve the special exception carried unanimously with affirmative votes from Miss Williams, Mister Wallace, Miss Stauffer and the chair.
