Tulsa commission hears update on new animal services facility, repairs and staffing

The Tulsa Animal Welfare Commission on June 9 received status reports on a new animal services facility under construction, repairs at the existing clinic after recent roof leaks, and staffing changes and openings.
Sherry Carrier, Tulsa’s animal services director, told commissioners the construction site has completed dirt testing and crews are waiting for the pad to dry after recent rain so foundation preparation can begin. “If the rain holds off, then they’ll be scheduled to start foundation prep soon,” Carrier said.
The update matters because the timing for the new facility affects when operations can move from the current site. Carrier said the current building suffered roof leaks during heavy rain and a restoration company is working in the clinic area. She said the Humane Society of Tulsa has loaned Tulsa Animal Services a fully equipped mobile clinic and generators while repairs proceed. “They’ve supplied everything that we needed… I don’t know what we would have done without their assistance,” Carrier said, noting the mobile unit has been in use for almost two weeks.
On staffing, Carrier reported most positions are filled, including promotions into an animal intake officer role, and that two animal control officer positions remain open. She said one vacancy is posted on the city website and one is posted with a national animal-care recruitment outlet to broaden the candidate pool. “Hopefully, we’ll fill those just as soon as we can and continue… trying to keep our facility staffed at 100%,” Carrier said.
Commissioners and staff also described a recent animal-abuse law seminar hosted in Tulsa that drew attendees from around the country; Carrier said local veterinarians participated as witnesses in prosecutions and that the district attorney’s office and city prosecutors have been supportive in pursuing cases.
