Westernport flood recovery: Allegany County outlines resources as officials confirm water system sale

Mayor Judy addressed the commission during public comment to thank county staff and volunteers for flood recovery assistance in Westernport. Commissioners and staff responding to public comment outlined recovery resources and upcoming actions.
Commissioner Atkinson summarized recovery logistics and resources: temporary dumpster removals coordinated with municipal mayors are scheduled for Friday, May 30 (Midland, Ellerslie, Lonaconia and Crescent Town) and Friday, June 6 (Westernport and Barton). He said the Small Business Administration is providing in-person disaster loan assistance for homeowners, renters, nonprofits and businesses at the First Assembly of God at the Westernport Activity Center beginning the day of the meeting and continuing through June 13.
Administrator Bennett reported that the county learned the Bel Air water system has been sold to American Water Service and that the sale will pass through regulatory review, including the Public Service Commission and applicable federal processes. Bennett said the county does not yet have details about potential rate impacts and that staff will post information to the county website as it becomes available.
Commissioner Brody and other commissioners thanked municipal leaders, county staff and volunteers for recovery efforts and encouraged continued donations of funds, supplies and time as cleanup continues. Officials said FEMA has conducted damage assessments and that federal assistance may follow.
