The Madison County Board of Supervisors voted to adopt a resolution supporting an SS 4a federal grant application to fund intersection improvements at U.S. 51 and Yandell/Weisenberger. County staff said the application requests $4,800,000 in federal funds with a $1,150,000 county match.
County Engineer Tim Bryan briefed the board on scheduling changes to traffic work tied to wet weather. He said heavy spring rains forced the county to postpone planned Interstate 55 nighttime closures; the first planned closure is now scheduled for a Thursday evening, with follow-up closures set for the following Monday through Wednesday, subject to further rain delays.
Board members also raised concerns about a separate state-led project on Highway 51, where five bridges are in a bid package. Tim Bryan said two bridges on Highway 51 are already closed and that bridge work in the bid package could require extended closures and detours over a multi-year period once a contractor is selected. The county is coordinating with MDOT and the contractor about detour routing and signage; the board requested MDOT representative Executive Director Bridal White and the county's lobbyist to appear at the next meeting to provide updates.
The board also authorized a public meeting for the Weisenberger Road Improvements project pending MDOT approval and approved related subcontracting for state-aid road projects submitted by AJ Construction.
