Board hears extra‑standard committee recommendations; schools request new assistant positions and activity name changes

District staff said the positions are requested because participation numbers have increased.
The committee also proposed renaming some activities to reduce confusion: vocal music will be listed as show choir, and FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) will be replaced by DECA to reflect a marketing emphasis. At the middle‑school level, the committee recommended adding speech as an extra‑standard activity; Westridge Middle School requested an assistant speech sponsor given strong participation.
Dr. Koehler said the committee membership is defined in the negotiated agreement and that the committee consulted with building leaders and union representatives (GIEA) where appropriate. When a board member asked whether the new positions fit in the upcoming budget, administrators replied that the committee’s presentation indicated the changes fit within the planned budget for the year.
Board members had no further questions; the item was handled as an informational report and will return as needed during the policy and budgeting cycle.
