Calaveras County supervisors on Tuesday voted unanimously to postpone a scheduled June 24 public hearing on proposed commercial solid-waste parcel fees and asked Integrated Waste Management (IWM) staff to return with a more detailed cost-of-service analysis.
Supervisor discussion focused on the need for greater specificity in how commercial parcels are categorized. Several supervisors urged staff to separate smaller businesses that generate relatively little waste from larger generators in the fee model, and to obtain better data before changing the fee structure.
IWM director Jennifer Kashi told the board the department had recommended changes to parcel-fee methodology but agreed that better cost and waste-generation data would improve the fairness of any new structure. The board directed staff to preserve the status quo fee structure for one more year, cancel the June 24 hearing on commercial-parcel increases and, where appropriate, contract for outside data or analysis to inform any future proposal.
Vote and practical effect The motion to cancel the June 24 hearing and maintain the current fee structure passed 5–0. Staff will return with a refined cost-of-service analysis and recommended next steps, including whether to pursue professional data services.
