Peoria Unified staff told the governing board June 11 they have begun narrowing contractors to provide updated facility condition appraisals and site evaluations and that the programmatic needs of schools will drive future decisions about district building relocation or new facilities.
Staff said the recent organizational changes in cabinet prompted a refocus on program‑first planning: the district will determine space needs by looking at what programs schools and departments require, and then evaluate site capacity and condition to determine whether to renovate, repurpose or build new space.
The district reported progress on vendor selection for comprehensive facility assessments (HVAC, roofing, paving, plumbing and other systems) and said any contracts not already on the district’s procurement schedule will be brought to the board for cooperative contract approval before work starts. Staff also described a planned series of key performance indicators for operational excellence (facility condition index, per‑pupil operating cost by site, enrollment growth vs. capacity) to guide future facility choices.
Board members emphasized the need for a strong public engagement and notice plan for any boundary or site changes and asked for more detail on how the district will sequence site appraisals, public meetings and any draft boundary options. Staff said a formal recommendation and implementation timeline is expected later in the fiscal year.
