Thornton council condemns antisemitic attack in Boulder, urges action and transmits resolution to Colorado officials

Council member Acunto introduced the resolution, which recounts that on June 1 an assailant used a makeshift flamethrower at a walkraising awareness for hostages held in Gaza; the council’s resolution cites reporting that eight people were injured in the incident and two suffered serious burns requiring air transport to medical facilities. The resolution says the attack occurred on the eve of the Jewish holiday of Shavuot and notes a rise in antisemitic incidents nationally since October 7, 2023.
The resolution affirms that legitimate criticism of any government should not devolve into antisemitism and cites the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism in its text. It also directs the city clerk to transmit copies of the resolution to the Boulder City Council, the governor of Colorado and local Jewish community organizations.
Council members spoke in support of the measure, describing the resolution as a reaffirmation of Thornton’s commitment to public safety and inclusion. The council also noted prior city actions condemning hate-speech distribution in 2022 in the Hunters Glen neighborhood.
The resolution passed unanimously; no additional enforcement measures or budget commitments were included in the text.
