Thornton Council proclaims July Parks and Recreation Month and July 2 National Wildland Firefighter Day

Council member Sandgren introduced both items. The Parks and Recreation Month resolution highlighted the health, social and economic benefits of parks, local programming and new amenities such as recently installed pickleball courts. Council members thanked parks and recreation staff for event work and maintenance and encouraged residents to use local parks and recreation programs.
The National Wildland Firefighter Day resolution recognizes wildland firefighters’ service and commemorates the South Canyon Fire of 1994, which killed 14 firefighters. Speakers noted Thornton Fire Department personnel participate in wildland firefighting efforts and partnerships that improve regional response and department readiness.
Both resolutions were moved, seconded and approved unanimously. The proclamations are symbolic recognitions encouraging public awareness and volunteer or resident participation; no new budget or ordinance changes were recorded during the meeting.
Council members said they plan to continue supporting parks and recreation programming and thanked staff for work on recent community events, including ThorntonFest.
