Greeley School District No. 6 trustees praise graduation season; board notes passing of former member John Hayfley

Trustees of Greeley School District No. 6 reviewed upcoming calendar items and reflected on a season of graduations during their June 9 work session, and the board acknowledged the recent death of former board member John Hayfley.

President Masch opened the calendar review and noted the district’s final events of the school year, including a gap graduation on June 21 and a Poudre Learning Center solstice dinner. Several board members — including Director Matthews and Director Norwood — praised the staff and grounds crews who stage commencement exercises and described graduations as important, emotional community events.

Director Matthews highlighted increased graduation rates over the past decade and thanked principals, school staff and security personnel for staging the ceremonies. “They are just fantastic events,” Matthews said, noting an approximate 10 percentage‑point increase in graduation rates over 10 years and estimating that represents roughly 150 more students walking across the stage each year.

Doctor Campos Spitzing also commented on graduations and on community programs; she reminded the board about the potential federal funding risks to TRIO and noted Greeley Dream Team’s role serving about 700 students. Campos Spitzing also announced she will host a French exchange student who will attend Greeley Central in the autumn.

President Masch and trustees closed the work session by thanking staff for the district’s budget book and other community materials and by noting the board would reconvene for the business meeting later the same evening.

No formal actions were taken during the work session.
