Mayor Ara Najarian read two ceremonial proclamations at the Glendale City Council meeting on June 10, declaring June 19, 2025, as Juneteenth Independence Day and naming June as Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month.
The Juneteenth proclamation commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and calls on residents to reflect, learn and engage in building “a future rooted in justice, unity, and the shared dignity of every person.” Najarian said, “Therefore, I, Ara Najarian, do hereby proclaim June 19 as a Juneteenth Independence Day and call upon all residents to reflect, learn, and engage in building a future rooted in justice, unity, and the shared dignity of every person.”
The Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month proclamation asked the community to acknowledge stigma that prevents many men from seeking help and encouraged awareness and access to support services. In comments following the proclamation, a council member said the city should ensure services and recognition are not limited to one gender and emphasized the need to include men in mental-health outreach.
Both proclamations are ceremonial and intended to encourage community awareness; the council did not take accompanying legislative or budgetary action at the June 10 meeting related to these proclamations.
