Cumberland girls win state outdoor track title; several athletes set school records

Cumberland High School's girls track team won the state outdoor championship at Brown University over the weekend, storytellers told the school committee on June 12.
Athletics staff said the team outscored a deep field including West Warwick and recorded personal bests and school records across several events. The title came down to the final event, the 4x400 relay. Presenters credited balanced scoring from many athletes and deep contributions from the squad: the committee transcript listed point scorers including Kylie DeFusco, Charlie McHugh, Peyton Goulding, Rose Timisto, Cece Ludwig, Brynn Patterson, Maddie Coyne and Juliana Hassenforce.
Two students earned individual state titles and school-record performances: Peyton Goulding won the discus with throws over 41 feet (one throw listed at 41 feet, 7.5 inches) and will attend the University of New Hampshire; Kylie DeFusco won an individual title in the 1,500 meters, setting a school record (4:29.03) and breaking a long-standing meet record. Athletics staff described DeFusco as one of the best track athletes to emerge from Cumberland.
Coaches and staff thanked parents and the community and congratulated the athletes for setting multiple personal records and the program's overall success.
