Board honors Commissioner Cammie Bremer’s service; commissioners, community leaders offer remarks

The El Paso County Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday adopted a proclamation honoring Commissioner Cammie Bremer’s meritorious service to the county and noted her transition to lead the Pikes Peak United Way. The board’s vote to adopt the proclamation was unanimous, 5-0.

Why it matters: Commissioners and community leaders credited Bremer with steady leadership on health and human services during COVID-19, stewardship of federal relief funding and attention to housing affordability. Speakers said Bremer’s public-service experience and background in nonprofit and health-care roles informed county decisions during crises.

Vice Chair Holly Williams read the proclamation highlighting Bremer’s career prior to elected office, noting roles in nonprofit, health care and governmental affairs. The proclamation records that Bremer was elected in 2018 and re-elected in 2022 to represent Commissioner District 5, and that she will leave office on June 10, 2025, to become Pikes Peak United Way’s chief executive following a national search.

Speakers at the dais and during the public remarks praised Bremer’s leadership. Crystal Latier, the county’s executive director of economic development, said Bremer ‘‘championed economic development programs’’ and supported affordable housing through the El Paso County Housing Authority. Johnna Reeder Claymier of the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Corporation called Bremer a leader who "brings people together to find common solutions." Mike Suggs, speaking for the Home Builders Association, thanked Bremer for partnering on housing policies. Jim Turbusch and District Attorney Michael Allen recalled Bremer’s calm, steady leadership during crises including the COVID-19 response and community tragedies; DA Allen presented a challenge coin in appreciation.

Bremer spoke at the close of the item and described her tenure in the county as a period of service during fires, floods, a pandemic and other community crises. She invoked the Micah 6:8 idea to "do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly" and said the community’s capacity for justice and kindness was her greatest takeaway. She said she looks forward to continuing public service in her new role with United Way.

The proclamation also praised Bremer’s work on allocating CARES Act and American Rescue Plan (ARPA) funds and noted her service on boards including the El Paso County Board of Health, Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments and the Pikes Peak Workforce Executive Committee. The board recessed after the vote; a reception was scheduled following the meeting.
