El Paso County marks Flag Day and Army’s 250th anniversary; Fort Carson commander attends

The proclamation, introduced by Commissioner Bill Wysong, cites Flag Day’s historical origins and notes El Paso County’s military installations, including Peterson Space Force Base, Schriever Space Force Base and Fort Carson. It encourages citizens to observe ceremonial events honoring the flag and the Army.
Colonel Eric Oksvaugh, garrison commander at Fort Carson, spoke at the meeting and reflected on the Army’s 250-year history and the local military community. "Service is a way of life here," he said, and he invited the public to attend the Army’s birthday events and a parade in Washington, D.C., where soldiers from Fort Carson were scheduled to march.
Commissioners used their comments to thank service members and encourage residents to display the flag on Flag Day. Vice Chair Holly Williams and Commissioner Corey Applegate described personal ties to military traditions; multiple commissioners noted local partnerships between the county and military installations.
The proclamation passed unanimously; commissioners recessed briefly after the vote and resumed the meeting for later items.
