The Board of Commissioners recommended a grouped set of vehicle purchases for multiple departments and approved a grant-funded mobile clinic vehicle for the county health department.
Vicky and procurement staff said the purchases were bundled this year in part to hedge against tariffs and supply constraints. The purchases follow the county's capital planning process and are generally replacement vehicles with high mileage; departments consider salvaging equipment for use elsewhere or sending vehicles to auction when appropriate.
Commissioners asked why several awards go to vendors available through the Michigan Cooperative ("MiTender/MITN") state purchasing system, such as Todd Wenzel and others. Vicky explained vendor selections typically use the state cooperative contracts to leverage statewide volume and secure lower pricing than can usually be obtained from a single local dealer.
Andrew Cox from the health department described the mobile clinic vehicle as a multipurpose exam and blood-draw unit with a wheelchair lift for accessibility, intended for community events, school and senior outreach, vaccination clinics and oral-health assessments. He said the vehicle is fully grant funded.
Commissioners praised the outreach potential and the county voted to recommend all vehicle purchases to the full board 12 to 0.
