Sierra Vista Lions Club, Salvation Army host Project Linus blanket‑making drive for children in crisis

“Project Linus … get groups together and they make blankets, handmade, homemade blankets for kids in crisis,” Morlock said. She said the effort includes no‑sew fleece blankets, crocheted afghans and quilts; volunteers ranged in age from children to seniors at recent sessions.
Morlock said the club partners with the Sierra Vista Salvation Army to host events and that blankets are distributed to hospitals, the sheriff’s office, fire departments, foster‑care agencies and other organizations serving children in need. “Any of the blankets they get, they're theirs forever,” she said.
The Lions Club planned a public blanket‑making session on Saturday, June 14, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Salvation Army Community Center on Wilcox. Morlock encouraged anyone who can tie a knot or crochet to attend and noted the social connection and intergenerational mentoring that have resulted from the project.
The program has taken donated fleece, quilts and crochet pieces and filled local needs; Morlock said volunteers created more than 80 blankets at a recent event and that Project Linus has produced more than a million blankets nationally. The club asked listeners to come make blankets, donate yarn or fleece, or bring completed blankets to assist local children.
